The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
